Commercial work starts the same way every time. Bare sheathing, a stem wall, and Dad out front scoping out the situation and sharing his years of wisdom. That photo is a few years old now; he was 81 then. He is 92 today and still shows up when he can...he's amazing. That was the Industrial Metals building, our first project of that year, where we ran stone veneer from the concrete stem wall up to the belt line under the windows. The first few days required freeze precautions and by the middle of the job we were dealing with heat. All in a day's work for a mason.
The other half of commercial masonry is buildings that are already up. At the Owyhee County Courthouse in Murphy we found typical mortar erosion and cracking on the chimney, worst in the corbelled section under the cap, with several bricks loose on top and a few already gone. On a chimney that tall, over a public building, the loose brick is the part you deal with first.
One thing worth knowing before you hire anybody: we do general construction as well as masonry. When a car came through the front of a Family Dollar, the damage went past the stone and into the framing and the interior. We opened it up, rebuilt the framing, got new sheathing on it, and only then went back to laying stone. One contractor, whole repair. Whether that carries five years or one depends on the job, and you will know which before you sign.

How to tell you need this
- Mortar separating, cracking or eroding around the building, even though it still looks fine from the parking lot
- Brick or stone on the ground under a wall, or a gap opening up at a corner
- Water staining or eroded stone under a rain gutter or downspout
- A vehicle has hit the building and the hole goes past the masonry into the wall behind it
- Loose brick at the top of a chimney or parapet standing over a public entrance

Do you do commercial masonry in Boise and the Treasure Valley?
Yes. Fackrell Masonry and Construction works out of Nampa in the Treasure Valley and Blackfoot in eastern Idaho. The service area is all of Southern Idaho, between the Oregon and Wyoming borders, as far north as McCall, Stanley, New Meadows, and Salmon.

Do you work on government and public buildings?
Yes. Past work includes the chimney at the Owyhee County Courthouse in Murphy, the chimney stack on Hangar 208 at Mountain Home Air Force Base, brick repair, repointing, cleaning and sealing at Swan Valley School, and multiple United States Forest Service comfort stations.
A car hit our storefront. Can you repair the whole thing, or just the masonry?
The whole thing. Vehicle damage to a storefront usually does not stop at the stone, and on the Family Dollar job it went through the framing and into the interior. We have many years of experience in general construction as well as masonry, so the framing, the sheathing and the stone all get handled by the same crew.
Do you do new commercial construction, or only repairs?
Both. New work includes the stone veneer on the Industrial Metals building and the masonry construction of the Blackfoot McDonald's.
