Repointing a commercial building

Mortar joints on a commercial brick building cut out and repointed, from cracked wall sections to the brick planters out front, then washed clean.

This one looked good at a glance. Two stories of red brick, awnings out front, tenants coming and going. Get up close, though, and there was mortar separation, cracking, and eroding all around the building.

There were open separations running straight through the joints in several places, wide enough to slide a knife into. Down at the planters out front the joints had eroded back further still, far enough that the brick was carrying work the mortar was supposed to be doing. It's a good idea to fix these problems BEFORE bricks start falling out.

We cut the bad joints out, packed fresh mortar in, tooled it, and let it set up. Then we washed the brick and the paving down and hauled our mess off. Nobody walking in the front door would know we had been there, which is the point.
