Sandstone fence
A cut sandstone fence wall and matching capped pillar built along a driveway, on a footing dug entirely by hand.
The wall ran right down the property line, which meant the only comfortable place to stand while digging the footing was the neighbor's grass. So we didn't. Hand-digging the foundation to avoid disrupting the neighbor's lovely grass... :-/ As this customer put it, good fences make good neighbors. We stepped on the adjacent lawn as little as possible.
From there it was string lines, a poured footing, rebar through the cores, and block after block set by hand. This is why I have kids...sandstone blocks are heavy! The pillar at the driveway end went up on a concrete block core and got faced and capped in the same sandstone so it reads as one piece with the wall.
All done. Disclaimer: The photo was taken from the sidewalk...NOT the neighbor's lovely lawn. :-)
