Repointing and sealing a brick light post

The customer had mortar coming apart on the brick light post out front of her home, and she wanted it handled before the masonry started coming loose on its own. About 30% of the joints on that post were deteriorating. She asked us to re-point the whole post rather than spot-fix it, so the color would come out uniform instead of patchy.

Re-pointing has a way of finding things. Once we got into it, the cap bricks on top lifted right off. That is normal, and it is the best way to find every loose brick and reset it before one of them ends up on the sidewalk.

She also loved her brick work and wanted it to last as long as possible, so she had us seal all the masonry on the house while we were there. The other advantage of sealing is that it brings the color out. In the last photo the house is sealed and the post is not yet, and you can see the difference. The mortar on the post was still curing, so we came back in a few weeks to seal it too.
