Repointing and sealing a brick light post

The customer had mortar coming apart on the brick light post out front of her home, and she wanted it handled before the masonry started coming loose on its own. About 30% of the joints on that post were deteriorating. She asked us to re-point the whole post instead of spot-fixing it, so the color would come out uniform instead of patchy.

Re-pointing has a way of finding things. Once we got into it, the cap bricks on top lifted right off. That's normal, and it's the best way to find every loose brick and reset it before one of them ends up on the sidewalk.

She also loved her brick work and wanted it to last as long as possible, so she had us seal all the masonry on the house while we were there. The other advantage of sealing is that it brings the color out. The house went ahead while the new mortar on the post was still curing, and standing at the curb the difference between the two was unmistakable. We came back a few weeks later and sealed the post as well.
